When Joneal and I first started dating, we decided to take a road trip from Minnesota to New Mexico. As we approached our departure date, a snow storm screamed into the western Rockies. We immediately grabbed our bags, and left; racing the storm to get through the mountains. We didn't know it then, but we were a great fit when it came to our spontaneous and laid back travel style.
By the time Jennavive was born, we'd become exceptional travel partners, and we decided that we wanted her to experience the joys of travel as well. It never occurred to us that traveling with a toddler was difficult. So, when she was a year old, we threw her diaper bag and pack-n-play into the car, and headed off on a 2,600 mile road trip to Las Vegas. By five, she was a pro. She packed her own bags, gave us ideas about where to go, and adapted to changing plans seamlessly.
A year ago, I was planning a spring break girls getaway. I was sitting in front of the computer, with the US map open on the screen trying to decide where to go. I asked Jennavive where she wanted to go, and she answered, "someplace I've never been". At that moment, it wasn't the answer I wanted. After all, she'd already been to 40+ states and 10 countries. What's left? Sitting there, I realized that even though we'd done a lot of exploring, we hadn't seen everything a state or country had to offer. There were still places, some only 10 miles away from home, that we hadn't been to yet. It was an epiphany for me.
We believe family travel can be fun, educational, relaxing, and spontaneous.
After 18 years working on large construction projects in the Oil, Gas, and Chemical industries, I'm taking a year off to focus on my passion for traveling. Some people may call it a midlife crisis, but I'm looking at it as an opportunity to reconnect with my family, and have an epic year of adventure.
You'll nearly always find Joneal behind the camera, the wheel of the RV, or the car. He's an expert at packing, dealing with mechanical glitches, and he's game to change his plans on one of my whims. He spent 19 years working in IT, but gave it all up two years ago to allow me to chase my professional dreams.
Jennavive is a 12 year old travel aficionado. She's developed an interest in photography, so you may see some of her work showcased on the site.
